Recently my friend and I were in a hurry to grab a bite to eat in the East Bay in the town of Piedmont before heading off to a micro brew party in Montclair, and in our rush we were fortunate enough to stumble upon Zatis, a Turkish restaurant. We enjoyed authentic Turkish cuisine and outstanding service at a reasonable price.
Actually, there is a Turkish menu and a more ‘mainstream' one, so if a group or couple includes some folks who want Turkish food and others who do not, everyone has a pretty good chance of having a great meal for a reasonable price. I believe Zatis was successful in achieving a nice balance of offering attractive menu offerings to satisfy a majority of palates. So, on to what impressed me.....
In particular, I want to share about my braised beef dish they call Sultan's Delight. This time of year I love comfort food. If you do too and you like beef, then this dish is worth trying. For a dish you might expect to feel heavy after consuming, they somehow succeeded in making it hearty and light. The dish consists of braised beef chunks, carrots, tomatoes, leeks and onions braised for over 7 hours and served over creamy eggplant. Every bite melts in your mouth and was perfectly seasoned. It was just enough for me and reasonably priced. The entrée was preceded by a generous warm slice of whole grain focaccia-style bread served with quality extra virgin olive oil and an assortment of marinated olives....delicious.
The entire meal of two entrees, one large salad and one glass of wine totaled just under $40 before tip. This seemed reasonable to me. My entrée was $14.
And of course for me, no visit to an eating establishment would be complete without my providing feedback about the atmosphere. I liked the cozy feel to the small space, the noise level was low and it was very clean. I look forward to having returning.
